It works great for me. I'll show you my equivalent setup and leave the
substantive explanation to Dag.

I compiled the modules directly into the kernel (I saw only later that
this is not the preferred method...)

 # ps ax | grep ir
 1996 ? SW 0:00 [irmanager]
 1998 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/irattach /dev/ttyS0 -d esi

(my processes avoid any potential y2k bug ;-) ).

I did not create any /dev/ircomm?'s. But my ttyS? are :

# ls -l /dev/ttyS*
crw------- 1 root tty 4, 64 Jan 21 14:53 /dev/ttyS0
crw------- 1 root tty 4, 65 May 5 1998 /dev/ttyS1
crw------- 1 root tty 4, 66 May 5 1998 /dev/ttyS2
crw------- 1 root tty 4, 67 May 5 1998 /dev/ttyS3

Here's something I had under 2.2.10 and kept with 2.2.14. My understanding
is that the irmanager invocation is not necessary (but I did not change
this little script)

/sbin/depmod -a
/usr/sbin/irmanager -d 1
/usr/sbin/irattach /dev/ttyS0 -d esi

(one minute later) I killed the ir processes and restarted them with:

/usr/sbin/irattach /dev/ttyS0 -d esi

# ps ax | grep ir
12824 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/irattach /dev/ttyS0 -d esi

# tail /var/log/messages
Jan 24 13:17:22 dhcp-1-190 irattach: Serial connection established.
Jan 24 13:17:23 dhcp-1-190 irattach: executing: 'echo dhcp-1-190 >
/proc/sys/net/irda/devname'
Jan 24 13:17:23 dhcp-1-190 irattach: Using device: irda0

and it works fine!

I'm not using IrCOMM, but I've used IrOBEX and TinyTP with a Palm III and
a Palm IIIx.

Good luck,
Scott
