Thanks for your comment, it encouraged me to keep on trying. It
turned out that the FIR driver, which I had tried out first
screwed up the IR port (even rebooting didn't help). After
re-configuring it with PS2.EXE (DOS), everything (i.e. SIR) works
fine now :-) :-) :-)
