The L-7089 is marketed in some coutries under different numbers. I think
this may relate primarily to the default network band configuration. As
far as I know, all the L-Series models are the same.

The serial cable makes the phone into a win modem. At the moment that seems
to mean it is a piece of expensive junk.

Some people report success with the SH-888 and cable. In a way the SH-888
has a similar problem, as it appears you still need to use IrDA layers
over the cable, i.e. the cable replaces the beam, it does not become a hayes
serial modem.
I'm using an L-Series in the US & Canada for the first time at the moment,
and it is fine in areas covered by GSM carriers. But I am using it only
for voice.
My experience with the L-Series is not good. It uses software flow control
so you cannot use slip. ppp works only until you do something that
runs the link flat out. Then it hangs up 99 times out of 100. I persisted
for a long time with all sorts of configurations, but could never get over
this problem. Motorola had no useful suggestions other than reduce the
baud rate. (With hindsight this seems to me like admission of a problem
without a solution.)
