I wonder if this message made it to the list --
copied below. Surely people have built 2.2.16
working with IrDA and irutils 0.9.10, so why would
irattach give errors -- Dag?...

o I am using IrDA from linux kernel 2.2.15pre5 and
  o irda-utils 0.9.10 since without a glitch, to sync
o my Palm with my Dell Imspiron 7000.
  o
o The well-behaving irattach logs this:
  o Aug 6 23:34:08 roll irattach: device=/dev/ttyS2
o Aug 6 23:34:08 roll irattach: SIR device
  o Aug 6 23:34:09 roll irattach: SIR device (2)
  o Aug 6 23:34:09 roll irattach: Starting device irda0
  o Aug 6 23:34:09 roll irattach: executing: 'echo roll > /proc/sys/net/irda/devnam
  o
o Recently, I tried out kernels 2.2.16 and
o 2.4.0test5. I get errors from irattach in both
  o cases:
  o
  o 2.2.16 irattach errors:
  o Aug 6 23:22:06 roll irattach: device=/dev/ttyS2
o Aug 6 23:22:06 roll irattach: SIR device
o Aug 6 23:22:06 roll irattach: tcsetattr: Invalid argument
  o
  o 2.4.0test5 irattach errors: Aug 7 00:18:43 roll
  o irattach: device=/dev/ttyS2 Aug 7 00:18:43 roll
o irattach: SIR device Aug 7 00:18:43 roll irattach:
o irattach: tty: set_disc(11): Bad file descriptor I
o must say that I recompiled newer kernels with the
o same config as for 2.2.15pre5. I got many
o assembler "...ignoring .modinfo section" warnings
o for 2.2.16, but no warnings for 2.4.0test5.
o However, 2.4 offered some /dev filesystem and new
o tty options upon make oldconfig which I selected
o or not quite randomly around 1 am. :-)
  o
o In all cases, I wonder why irattach breaks with
o 2.2.16 and what can be done to fix that?
