Get the irenhanc package from Palm -- this makes the IR port programmable
through the serial manager, so any app that uses serial will automatically
use IR instead (selectable in Prefs).

http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/irenhanc.html
(you may only need two of the four files -- see the readme in BeamSync)

Then install IrLink ($) or BeamSync (free)
http://www.tt.rim.or.jp/~tatsushi/bsync10b2.zip

then set up IrCOMM on Linux, and you can use pilot-xfer or similar to
hotsync over IR, for example, or roll your own.
