devfs is just an unnecessary complication. The important bit is that
the device files have the correct major/minor numbers:

ls -l /dev/ircomm*
crw-rw-rw-    1 root     dialout  161,   0 Dec  2  1999 /dev/ircomm0
crw-rw-rw-    1 root     dialout  161,   1 Feb  3  2000 /dev/ircomm1
crw-rw-rw-    1 root     dialout  161,   2 Sep 12  1999 /dev/ircomm2

Given the correct environment variables:

$ env | grep PILOT
PILOTPORT=/dev/ircomm0
PILOTRATE=57600

$ pilot-xfer -l
Waiting for connection on /dev/ircomm0 (press the HotSync button now)...

....

All works fine. pilot-link-0.9.3 from source.
