I was going to add the I/O locking flags that I mentioned earlier on
the list but when I investigated further, I decided that some API
changes should be made aswell. Since I was already planning to change
the API to use an opaque device handle, I may as well do all this at
the same time.

As discussed previously, this work should all be done in a separate
libkarma-1.0.0 branch. As far as I can tell, mercurial branches are
just separate copies of the repository. Would it be possible to
set one up, please?

I am off on holiday for a fortnight and I plan to make a start on
this when I get back.
