Good news - my karma's alive again after a reflash and format.
Bad news (or actually good news from a bug-hunting point of view) I've still
got the problem that started this thread - tracks that are copied to the
karma are not added to the database.
After doing a Rescan Music on the karma, the tracks are in the DB, but doing
a riocp -b does *not* add the tracks to the database. On the bright side,
it's not killing the karma anymore!
I've also just had the pleasure of copying 10GB worth of music straight from
Amarok. Still haven't got over the novelty of that :-)
