Hi, I've managed to get my Karma auto-mounting on my Edgy Eft box without having to add an entry to fstab. Doing so means there's only ever a single icon for the device in the 'Computer' window and it's only there when the Karma is mounted.
It transpires that the fstab entry was required because g-v-m was failing to mount the device using pmount (which is what Debian/Ubuntu g-v-m uses to create mount points on-the-fly). Automagical mounting using pmount was failing because of an "invalid file system type", i.e. OMFS isn't "supported" by pmount. Actually pmount just passes the fstype to mount, once its done its thing, so as long as the OMFS module is loaded pmount should have no problem with it. It's not in the hard-coded list of supported file systems in the pmount source code though, hence the lack of support. I've patched my pmount source (the file is fs.c if you're interested - it's obvious what to do when you look at it!) and now my Karma is automagically mounted whenever I plug-in without having any fstab line :) Apparently Ubuntu Feisty doesn't use pmount for this, so the bug will disappear for Ubuntu users in a few months' time, but if that extra un-mountable icon was bugging you as much as it was me, patching pmount is your solution. I've submitted the patch to the author and raised a bug for Ubuntu, bug I don't imagine it will be acted-upon because of pmount being deprecated in Ubuntu....
