I prefer SuS fpathconf(), pathconf() is just a wrapper to fpathconf();

IMHO like sysconf - which is clearly a userland (libc) thing - fpathconf
should be also a userland thing.

long int fpathconf(int fildes, int name);
long int pathconf(const char *path, int name);

I still think that ioctl is the easiest and best way and to add
another syscall is a bad idea.
