If it is not an audio only channel, then specify the video device:  If
your video device may be something other than 'video0' like 'video1'.

mplayer -vo xv tv:// -tv
driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:alsa:immediatemode=0:adevice=hw.1,0:norm=ntsc:chanlist=us-cable:channel=3
