I was able to hookup a NMI button and handler to my failing system and
determined that the crash is caused basically because the kernel has eaten
itself. It usually crashes at random places each time, but more than once I
caught it in memcpy() with the count being a negative number. In both instances,
the caller of memcpy was slhc_uncompress().

As an experiment, I set the following options to the pppd call on the failing
system:

noaccomp nopcomp novj novjccomp nobsdcomp nodeflate

and it worked just dandy. If I remove only the 'novj', it fails. So there is
something in slhc that is not happy.

Without the 'novj' and slhc_compress() essentially nop'd out, it still fails,
but it first emits several oops panic dumps to the console (this is a little
better than the quiet hangs of yesterday). It leads me to believe the problem
lies in slhc_uncompress().

I'll keep looking...
