I use a Maxtor DiamondMax IDE 10GB hard drive with 22,332 cylinders, 16
heads, and 63 sectors. I installed it after I already had linux on my
machine. Didn't have any problems or need to do any configurations
other than fdisk with it. Using Red Hat 5.1

Don't know if it would really help you, but if you want to see a copy of
my lilo.conf, email me.

Subject: Strange RealAudio problem with IP masquerading
Date: Mon, 05 Apr 1999 01:58:34 GMT

Would appreciate any suggestions...

I have an RH5.2 (2.0.36) system running very nicely on a Compaq
Prolinea 486. It's set up to do IP masquerading to allow three other
machines to connect to the internet via a cable modem.

The problem is with RealAudio. ".ram" files that contain references
to pnm:// URLs -- I haven't found one that works yet, and I've found
many that don't (all the audio files on news.bbc.co.uk, for example).
They all give "Connection to server has timed out".

All other RealAudio files, including the channels on the main
RealAudio screen, seem to work just fine from the three client
machines (Win boxes) on the local class C network. (I've noticed
.ram files beginning with ftsp:// that work fine, for example.)

Here's the setup I have:

# 1. Kernel networking options:
CONFIG_FIREWALL=y
CONFIG_NET_ALIAS=y
CONFIG_INET=y
CONFIG_IP_FORWARD=y
CONFIG_IP_MULTICAST=y
CONFIG_SYN_COOKIES=y
CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL=y
CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL_VERBOSE=y
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE=y
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPAUTOFW=y
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_ICMP=y
CONFIG_IP_ALWAYS_DEFRAG=y
CONFIG_IP_ACCT=y
CONFIG_IP_ROUTER=y
CONFIG_IP_NOSR=y
CONFIG_SKB_LARGE=y

# 2. /etc/rc.d/rc.local startup script:
/sbin/ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.1
/sbin/route add -net 192.168.1.0
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -p deny
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
/sbin/ipautofw -F
/sbin/ipautofw -A -r udp 6970 7170 -c tcp 7070
# (I guess the ipautofw is not really necessary -- but I'm trying
# everything ... and yes, /sbin/ipautofw does exist...)

I'm not seeing anything in /var/log/messages that would indicate a
problem, and lsmod gives:

DEFAULT:[~] lsmod
Module         Pages    Used by
ip_masq_raudio     1            1
ip_masq_ftp        1            0

I don't know enough about what distinguishes pnm:// .ram files from
other kinds of RealAudio content to figure out why they're failing...
if anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them.

If you're replying by email, please remove the obvious from my
address.

Regards,
Rohan

You've just answered your own question. If you do A and B stops working
and then undo A and B starts working again then don't do A. Simple!

I'd really have to ask why you would want to do this. I know you're
going to say "but the RAM disk will be so much faster than the drive".

Obviously you've fogotten about virtual memory and disk caching under
Linux. Basically what happens is that any RAM which is not being used
for the kernel, applications and data is used as disk cache. Under this
situation it is possible to create a file, write to it and then delete
it without that file EVER being written to disk. So why do you need
use a RAM disk for /tmp???

I am using Boot Magic with Windows NT/98 (dual boot) and Linux with no
problems. I know it took me awhile to get it working (I kept erasing
and reinstalling the Linux option) but part of that was another problem
with Lilo and not with Boot Magic. I placed my Lilo on the Linux
partition and Boot Magic had no problems finding it and starting it.

Hi:

I am wondering if someone can help me with this. I want to set up a
script that lets users set their password over the web. Before you
start worrying about secuirty, I have locked out all FTP access and
telnet access to all except admin. Basically I want users to
automatically set up POP accounts for themselves.

I am able to change adduser to suid root so it can get called from a web
script, but passwd does not want to budge and insists that I am logged
on as root to change each password.

Thanks in advance for your help..

There are two versions. The one currently in beta is a Linux binary,
and it's my understanding that it will run Windows 95 as well as NT.

Check out vmware's news server: news.vmware.com. There are a number of

It isn't that useful for me until it lets me run OS/2 in a vm, and that

So your problem is with a) your IT department, and b) with your lack of

The OS bundle is RedHat 5.2, with all the OS updates from redhat.com.

The hardware is twin PPros on a Tyan S1668 motherboard, and two BusLogic
SCSI controllers (BT-946C and BT958) which share the same interrupt.

>From 'more proc/pci" ...

>  Bus  0, device  13, function  0:

>      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe2000000.

The BusLogic support is _not_ modular, but is a kernel builtin, since
I have no wish to risk the system being unable to read it's boot drive.
FlashPoint support is disabled, since I own no such cards.

2.2.5 builds fine, both with and without Plug and Play support enabled.
The reboot proceeds up to the initialization of the second SCSI
controller, the 946c, which runs the tape drives. Then the system locks
into a reset-fail-reset cycle with the second controller, and it's
time for <ctl><alt><del>.

This _never_ happened with 2.0.x. And the behavior persists, whether
Plug and Play support is set up in the kernel or not. Upgrading to
RedHat's 2.2-kernel-support RPMs does not affect matters in the
slightest.

How do I fix this or work around it ?

[Oh, BTW .. does anyone out there know how to un-fsck the bloody IRQ
 allocation in the Tyan S1668 ? The "reset the CMOS, then install the
 boards" " trick I used to use on the old Intel Venus motherboards
 does not work on the Tyan.]

Thanks in advance,
Charles Roten

can anyone help me out with the c++ compiler. When i try to compile
programs using c++ i get the following error.

configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler
cannot create executables.

i reinstalled all the gcc RPM's for redhat including the gcc++ package
along with the g++ and stdc++ libraries. when this didnt work, i
installed gcc from the source tar.gz. This didn't work either.

anyone know how to fix this?

What have hackers got to do with this, aside from the fact that if someone
were trying to crack your system's security, one might help you out?

Thanks for all the replies. Strange that Emacs should want to know your
domain name though.

You can use /sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp as well.

You should create a separate file called rc.firewall in the /etc/rc.d
directory.
Set its ownership to: chown root.root /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.
Set its permissions to: chmod 0754 /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.

The file should look something like this:
==============================================================================
 echo "Enabling IP MASQ, MASQ timeouts, MASQ modules and advanced
firewalling"

                #Load the MASQ modules
                        #
                        echo Loading MASQ modules
                        #/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_cuseeme
                        /sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
                        /sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc
                        #/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_quake
                        #/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_vdolive
                        /sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio

                # Finished with MASQ modules

        echo "Enabling IP Masqurading.."
        echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

        /sbin/ipfwadm -F -p reject
        /sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -W eth0

        echo "rc.firewall done."

Try these sites for some help.
http://www.tor.shaw.wave.ca/~ambrose/
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~dranch/LINUX/TrinityOS.wri
http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net/linux/faq/index.html

The first one will get you started.
The second one is a wealth of information and good sense.
The third one will build you one very secure firewall automatically if
you fill in the blanks :)
You should use the Linux Netscape to build, save and download the
firewall script, as I have found that saving the file in windows and
then moving it over to Linux trashes the file in some way as to make it
non functional :(
The last section of the firewall script includes stuff for DHCP and
caching DNS as well so you will have to edit the file.

Good luck!

Bullshit. Figure out how much FREE development time has gone into Linux,
then work out the market cost for that - that's the real cost of Linux.
Here in the real world, people develop software/OSes to make money. Linux
is somewhat of a aberration (that's a good thing) but cannot be used as an
example of the market value of an OS. Linux is free only because of many
peoples good will and free effort. The instant you start charging for
software, you necessarily have to recover all your develpment costs - and I
would guess that these would be quite high for Linux.

BTW, there is competition. No competition would imply only one OS - there
are many available, people don't HAVE to use MS (or Sun or BeOS or whatever)
