The default window manager is the one that is started in the file
$HOME/.xinitrc or /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc if you don't have the first
file.

You would get the same error in Windows, however there is a program that I think
tries to get around this, it is called esound. The Enlightenment window manager
and The Gnome Desktop environment are currently using it.

There seems to be a problem with the lxdialog companion utility which is
built prior to running Menuconfig. Usually this is an indicator that you
have upgraded/downgraded your ncurses libraries and did not remove the
old ncurses header file(s) in /usr/include or /usr/include/ncurses.

It is VERY important that you have only one set of ncurses header files
and that those files are properly version matched to the ncurses libraries
installed on your machine.

You may also need to rebuild lxdialog. This can be done by moving to
the /usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog directory and issuing the
"make clean all" command.

I am not knocking learning-- that is my profession after all. However
for most people they did not get a computer to learn about operating
systems and computers. They got them in order to send email to
collegues, look at web sites, do word processing etc. Just as they
bought a car, not to learn about differentials, sparcplugs, or piston
ring tolerances, but to get them from one place tothe next. WE all have
limits, of time and of ability, to what we can learn. learning takes
time and effort and that time and effort may not be available to learn
about operting systems.

This is especially true about computers, where the opportunity to learn
is always there but can be turned off by intimidation. MS is dumb in
that they offer no road to learning, by making anything more
sophisticated almost impossible to do on their machines. On the other
hand Linux tends to put up a high barrier to initial use of the system,
which is also well known as a highly efficient way of stopping people
from learning. Self confidence, which comes only by successfully making
things work, is crucial to any learning experience, and Linux tends to
sap such self confidence by unnecessary difficulties in getting started.

For ppp all ISPs have voluminous material telling you how to hook up a
Win95 machine. Although it tends to be recipie type stuff, those recipies
should be translatable into linux recipies for connecting as well.

I would suggest using fdisk instead, although I am sure you can also do it with
disk druid.
The point is that you can have at most four primary or extended partitions on
one disk. The D: and E:
drives are two logical partitions in the same extended partition. So that is
one. You should
be able to install Redhat with three primary partitions, one of which will be
a swap partition . Or you can also create one or more
extended partitions and subdivide them into logical partitions. Linux's fdisk
(or disk druid)
should see the D: and E: partitions. You should leave them alone. After you
have finished
installing Linux, you should be able to create mount points and mount them.

The only potential problem is that if the old Windows partitions are FAT32,
fdisk may
report differences between the logical and physical beginnings or ends of the
partitions.
To be safe, I would try not to overlap anything so reported. However, I
recently ran
Fips20 to repartition a Windows98 disk, and it claimed that error message was
harmless.

If anyone can explain clearly the meaning of that message, it would be helpful.
I presume
it has to do with the difference between FAT32 and FAT16.

By the way, to mount FAT32 partitions under Linux use the type vfat.

read-write ntfs support is in 2.1 (2.3 yet?)
and putting something like this:
/dev/hda5 /nt-drive ntfs defaults 1 1
should work in your fstab

See also http://www.precisioninsight.com/products.html for a discussion of
RedHat's efforts to make drivers available for new video cards.... The readme in
their ftp directory provides step-by-step instructions for downloading the
driver (and an updated version of XF86config that will be needed to configure
your system).

I've read that too, but since some things REQUIRE egcs, installed it
in my funky /var/local/bin/egcs (non-standard) dir and made this
lame script to switch back and forth.

#!/bin/bash

else

libplds21

I haven't found a hint on mozilla.org. Perhaps they're part of Next

Please answer me ASAP, I want to *build* the thing! ;)

They don't want to. They have instead made specifications for "Gnome
compliancy", so you can use every window manager you want if it is Gnome
compliant. Others will work, too, but not as well.

You can. You need to start up the Gnome Midnight Commander in your session
startup script.

Icewm is practical; WindowMaker is pretty; Enlightenment is on the cutting
edge.

My Geek Code is no longer in my .signature. It's available on e-mail request.
It's sad to live in a world where knowing how to program your VCR actually
lowers your social status...
