set -o vi, which is how you do it in ksh under AIX, too.

I've never had a hard time getting it right. I've configured ppp on 3
operating systems and two different distributions of Linux, on several
boxes, with a couple of different kinds of modems. In Linux, I've never
had to install a modem driver. Not so in MS world. I've installed
drivers several different times in Windows. What's up with that? As
long as your Linux kernel is configured to support ppp, and your modem
is set up properly (basically, you only need to have /dev/ttySX set to
the right port; which is usually automagically done, anyhow). Beyond
that, the GUI conf tools do the job in a snap, although with EZPPP/KPPP
you should read the EZPPP HOWTO. (e.g., with those tools, did you make
sure that /etc/ppp/options existed but was empty?).
I'm not anything special, not a genius or anything, but I've never had a
problem getting ppp to work properly. I can't understand why other
people make it such a chore; it's really not.

I am running vbox-2.0.0b4 and it works fine. There's just one little

When listening to the standard message there's a very ugly noise (in

avoid this?

Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply. "file" said
that it was gzipped. Unzipping it produces an executable

You can probably change the write interval if you find the source file
that determines this, then recompile it. What I did is remove update
from one of the /etc/rc* directories (can't remember which one now,
you'll have to locate it). This keeps it from loading at boot time.
Occasionally, I do a 'sync' command to flush the buffers to disk once or
twice a day. Since I have a UPS power backup, this has never caused any
problem for me. For harddrive silence, this is the way to go. Anyone
running critical data without a UPS shouldn't do this.
Alternatively, if you want to kill update temporarily, just locate
the process with ps x or pidof, then 'kill -9 [id]'. Restart it
from the command line when needed.

I downloaded netshow_linux from the Microsoft site, renamed
it to netshow, and made it executable. But I cannot execute
it. For example,
$ netshow
bash: /usr/local/bin/netshow: cannot execute binary file
I get a similar error message if I run it from netscape.
The file starts
0x7fELF
so it looks like an ELF binary.
I looked through Dejanews and other people seem to be able
to run netshow. Any idea as to what I am doing wrong?
I'm using the RedHat 5.1 distribution with kernel 2.0.34.

The other option is to gunzip the file, then pipe the output to tar. IE:
gunzip -c tarbal.tgz | tar -xvf -
or
gunzip -c tarbal.tar.gz | tar -xvf -
The -c option to gunzip will output the unzipped results to stdout,
which is in turn piped to stdin of tar, which the terminating '-' tells
to use stdin for the input tar file. FYI, not all Unix tar programs will
understand the 'z'ip option, so for those systems, the above methods are
the only way to unzip/untar the source without changing the original
file.

In Linux, typing "man" gives the answer to your questions in the same
way HELP gave you answers under DOS.
There's also "info", a hypertext help system. And there's the /usr/doc
directory. And, well, if you've got a system like dwww, susehilf, KDE
help or gnome-help, you can access pretty much all of your system's
documentation via a Web browser.

For larger documents, use Word to output in Rich Text Format (.rtf).
This should produce a format which can be handled a bit more
consistently by other programs that have an RTF translator. I have
generally had good results with it, although you may have to do some
fixup with table formats and text which is supposed to flow around
illustrations, etc.

Subject: Re: K6-400 "kernel paging request" errors
Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 10:40:23 +1100
Hi Stefan,
I have a system which has a VERY similar configuration to yours.
FIC MPV3 M/B
K6-2-400
256Mb RAM
DPT 3334UW SCSI Controller
Raid 1 Assembly
Adaptec 2940W Controller
SCSI CD-ROM
SCSI Tape Drive
After first installing RH 5.2 on this system I was able to re-compile the
kernel to include the EATA-DPR driver in the kernel to mount the raid
assembly.
However, I was unable to compile the kernel again after this.
I found when I dropped the CPU clock to 350MHz and increased the
memory wait states, the kernel, iBCS and samba-2.2 compiled OK.
A couple of days later, I changed the CPU for another K6-2-400 and
found I was able to compile the kernel without any problems.
Since swapping the CPU I haven't had any other problems. (Yet!!)
By the way, I noticed you also have a DPT controller.
Did you install RH directly onto your raid assembly??
If so can you let me know how you did it.
I had to install RH onto an IDE hard drive and mount the raid assembly
after compiling the EATA driver into the kernel.
I want to remove the IDE drive and install RH onto the DPT drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Even though I´ve got a differnet mother-board (DFI .., AGP Matrox G200,
AHA2940 - disks, dds1-dc, cdrom) Kernel paging errors occure sometimes
upon loading of the bttv driver.
Did you try other FSB clock rates?
With my K6-2 400 it is impossible to compile the kernel with FSB 100MHz
(no go at 400, 350, 300 - errors: sig 11 - sig 6). Kernel compile is
ok at any FSB 95Mhz rate. (428, 380, 333). But now I´ve some trouble
compiling the QT library (sig 11 :-(( at 95 MHz FSB). Perhaps its a good
idea to replace the processor. Mine has production lable (below voltage
infos) A 9849 EPFW.

We have upgraded from 4.2 to 5.0 to 5.2 with an internal SCSI travan tape
drive
and we have not had any problems. /dev/nst0 is the non-rewinding scsi
tape
device. The standard rewinding device is /dev/st0. What happens if
you do
mt -f /dev/st0 status
with a tape in the drive.
Are you sure there isn't something wrong with the tape?
Of course, the kernel has to support scsi tape drives, but the generic
kernel that
5.2 installs does support it. You could try removing the device and
remaking
it using MAKEDEV. I forget how you completely remove it, but the one
time I tried something like that with a device (not a tape drive), I
remember I
had some problems and had to fiddle. I had to do some studying of man
pages
to reinstall the device, but I don't remember all the steps.
Scsi devices are basically very simple under Linux. However, you may
have to
make the device in the first place using MAKEDEV. If you upgraded as
opposed
to reinstalling, it should still be there. But if you reinstalled, you
might have to
make it again.
