Just to make sure. Didi you get all of the utility updates listed in the
upgrade guide on www.linuxhq.com? Specifically the util-linux update?

Um, not true. It actually makes a lot more sense, even in the US.

Think of things like daylight savings time, for example. How much time
is there between 1:59am and 3am? Most nights it's an hour and one
minute. But one night a year it's a minute, and one night a year it's 2
hours and a minute.

By dealing with things as UTC, you avoid the ambiguity: everything is
just an offset from a basic pointer.

(Hint: even those in the UK won't be on UTC during the summer.)

It does believe the clock.

Some of us don't reboot, let alone reboot multiple times a day.

I sure as hell ain't going to get up in the middle of the night twice a
year to set the clocks on several machines. They can do it just fine
themselves.

The file you are looking for is '.login'. However, when you open a
new xterm, '.login' might still be executed. It depends on whether
xterm was invoked with the '-ls' option.

I check my log files fairly regularly. If it's time for a new start or
the files are growing a bit large, I'll delete or archive the logs that
need it.

It's probably just a personal thing, but, the automatic splitting and
archiving off of log just doesn't make sense when you've got a small
system. It results in lots of .gz files of 0-30k in your log directory
which add to the clutter.

fdisk. However, I am not sure if you can unmount the root
file system, so what you'll probably need to do is use your
install disk, then when you get up to the partitioning part of
the installation, just delete the partition. Once you've
deleted it, you can format it from inside dos/windows.

Hi. I have a RH5.2 2.0.36 box with PAM 0.64-4 installed.

I have been trying to set limits on user memory usage using the files
in /etc/security.

I have added lines to limit "rss" and "memlock" but it doesn't seem
to work. I also edited the files /etc/pam.d/login and /etc/pam.d/xdm,
adding the following line:

session required /lib/security/pam_limits.so

It seems that some limits such as the limit on number
of logins works, but some limits don't.

oh, here's a nice "test program" to make sure that memory limits work...
( unfortunately they don't on my box ... )

#!/usr/bin/perl
@x=();
while (true){ push (@x,1) ; }
# end

I am running RH 5.9 and it automatically loads a blank screen
screensaver, before login. I was wondering if I could change this to
DPMS monitor control instead of a black screen. I can change my
settings under X by adding the xset command in my .xinitrc, but this
does not work in the console, and I wanted to make DPMS the default.

Thanks.

If the plug looks similar to the one your keyboard uses, it's a PS/2.
The serial mice have two rows of pin-sockets.

comment out any lines that say "virtual" from your XF86Config file
(ie prepend a # to all lines that say "Virtual .... " ).
This will be in /etc , /etc/X11 , or /usr/lib/X11 depending on your setup

~/.Xclients on a Redhat system. I think it's .xinitrc on a Slackware
system. You may need to create it:

#!/bin/sh

gnome-session

You'll then need to make it executable

chmod +x .Xclients

DO NOT INSTALL STAR OFFICE IN THE DEFAULT SINGLE-USER MODE!!!!

The documentation for StarOffice isn't that bad... but it sucks that
the process isn't intuitive enough that you can get away with just
installing the program without reading the documentation first.

The "best" way to install StarOffice is to login as root... change to
the directory where you unpacked all the installation files, and run the
setup program with the "/net" flag. The will install the main system-wide
files to some central directory (I used "/opt/Office50").

Once the main system-wide files are installed... log in as your
regular-user self and run the setup program that is in the directory you
just installed the system-wide files to (in my case,
"/opt/Office50/bin"). This will copy some settings and about 2 or 3 megs
of stuff to your user's home directory. When all's said and done... you
will run the "soffice" startup script that this places under your home
directory (in my case, "/home/steve/Office50/bin/").

Even if you use your Linux box as root, you have to do this extra
"user installation" step. You CANNOT run StarOffice from the system-wide
directory that the initial setup program creates!

Hope this helps,
Steve
