Subject: printtool crashes - problem with printerdb in RedHat 6.0
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 09:38:50 -0400

Hi,

I have RedHat 6.0, kernel 2.2.9, Ghost script 5.50 (via rpm), Epson
Stylus 600 and DEC Writer 95 (using Epson LQ2550 drivers) printers. I
can no longer run RedHat's printtool. Last night I tried adding a new
printer to pass through directly print jobs from WordPerfect and got
this error:

# printtool
Error in startup script: can't read "printerdb_descr(EpsonStylusColor)":

"set printer $printerdb_descr([lindex $info 4])"

Note that I am able to print fine with my previously created printers so
I'm not sure what the problem is with the db file. I also tried renaming
"StartEntry: U_EpsonStylusColor" to "StartEntry: EpsonStylusColor" and
also commented out all of the Stylus printers from my /etc/printcap
file, leaving only the dot matrix/LQ2550 printer in. These attempts also
had problems with the pinterdb file.

Has anyone else experienced this or suggestions on what to try?? Deja
News found no one.

Thanks,
Glenn

Depends whether you have the tiny elvis or some other vi clone. I know that
BSD vi (FreeBSD) works well on any size file, although it can take a little
bit to open it if it is big.

Hi,

Are there any tools (beside logrotate) or is there a simple way (can I call
syslogd to create a new file)?

It would definitely be easier if you were telling us the details
(like, your /usr/src/linux/.config file) .

The similar functionality under Unix is provided by shell
scripts. Here's a simple example:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-<Cut Here>-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
#!/bin/sh

if some_command ; then
        echo "It worked!"
else
        echo "It failed!"
        exit 1
fi
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-<Cut Here>-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

For more information on shell scripting, consult the man page
for sh(1), or any of the many fine publications regarding the Bourne
shell. If the desired functionality is simply to execute a series of
commands without regard for exit status, the commands can simply be
listed in order.

Subject: Automatically start a process in the context of a user when booting

How do I start a process in the context of another user?

I have an httpd which runs in the context of the root account, and I
have another httpd which runs in the context of a user account. I would
like the user account httpd to start automatically on reboot. If I just
add the httpd command to rc.local, then it will start in the context of
root.

Since I typically have 60-90 days uptime between reboots, maybe this is
a non-issue. But I'd like to know....

Thank you

Subject: /dev/ttyp# & /dev/pts permissions
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 10:01:09 -0400

Recently there was a post to the linux-security list indicating a problem
with permissions on the /dev/pts filesystem. It had something to do with
incorrect permissions on the /dev/pts directory, and the fact that the
entries were being created as "world-writeable", such that another logged in
user could potentially flood a tty with garbage (i.e. cat /dev/urandom >
/dev/pts/0). This was very intriguing, so I went and looked into what
permissions were being used on my box. First I discovered that I had not
correctly updated the dev RPM, do I didn't even have the /dev/pts
filesystem. My stuff still works because I use wterm-6.2.6, which
apparently doesn't support the new UNIX98 pty system. This leads to my
first question. Since wterm still uses the /dev/ttyp# devices, why are
_all_ 256 of my /dev/ttyp "world-writeable" AND "world-readable"? If I
change it (i.e.. chmod 600 /dev/ttyp0), the when I wterm as a normal user it
skips this tty and will use /dev/ttyp1 (ie. it uses the first available full
access (666) tty)...Thus, it would appear that my term is wide-open to
anyone else on my box (fortunately, I am the only one, but I want to know
what the heck is going on here). When I telnet to a FreeBSD box at work,
the /dev/ttyp# entries are correctly mode 600, so perhaps its a compile
option or configuration setting somewhere?

I have now updated my dev files, and I am trying to move towards using only
/dev/pts enabled servers, but wterm is such a cool term that I don't want to
get rid of it just yet. The latest rxvt release (www.rxvt.org) _does_
support the /dev/pts stuff, _and_ has transparency and next-scroll, but no
side menu or transparent scroll gutter (yeah, yeah, I'm a sucker for bells
and whistles). If anyone can point me in the direction of information about
tty's and permissions, I would be most appreciative, as I haven't been able
to find much of anything on this topic, and it seems to be a very important
issue to understand.

Thanks for reading all of this!!
- Dardo

Not sure what you mean with "context of another user" (another UID?, another
home dir?, another CWD?, the environment of another user?), but maybe you
are looking for "su".

This sounds like there aren't any "shares" defined. The Windoze code
seems
to want to collect a password whether it will be useful or not, so it
cheerfully
misleads you into thinking that *some* password will do.
A second guess is that there is some inconsistency in whether passwords
are encrypted. But if you get past the first screen and can see the Linux
public
directory, this is probably not the trouble.
The file that defines all this is /etc/smb.conf.
