Yeah, but it could be worse. You could have a President who doesn't
know what the definition of the word "is" is. :)

I too prefer that people be free to decide most things for themselves
(indeed, ALL things, so long as they do not harm others). That is why
even in a "democracy," if there were such a thing, there would have to
be limits on the powers government could lawfully exercise. Slavery,
genocide, etc. can never be right, even if a majority can be
temporarily persuaded that they are.

Bring up Netscape.

Then Edit ---> Preferences ---> Mail & News groups --> Newsgroup Servers

Pick your server and then pick the "EDIT" button. Check the box that
says "Only ask me when necessary........"

See if that will work for you.

It's just as well. Both roads go to a bad place, and, indeed, the
*same* bad place.

The issue to me is not whether an all-powerful government should
pursue left-wing or right-wing policies.

The issue is why should we ever tolerate an all-powerful government in
the first place?

I'm no more proud of the crimes committed by my own "government" than
those committed by its ideological opponents. When a little child is
murdered, or starves to death, that little child's suffering is just
as horrible no matter whose ideology caused it.

But people who are free, and understand the responsibilities inherent
in that freedom, seldom commit crimes, even given the opportunity.

And virtually all large-scale crimes are committed by all-powerful
governments, or their agents.

Government is a necessary evil, but it is evil, and it should never be
allowed to become larger than is absolutely necessary. Even Marx
conceded this point, although sadly most of his followers do not.

Nonsense. The US education system has been ruined by an inequitable

Is there a particular reason why you absolutely have to use
Netscape to download? Try one of the many available FTP clients,
or if it's an http:// URL, simply use wegt: right-click on
the link, select "Copy this link to clipboard", open (or switch
to) an xterm, do 'wget -c' <middle mouse button>.

I'm trying to setup a pc that will be running both qpage for paging,
and hylafax for faxing. Both setups will access the same modem. It
seems that one or the other programs is regularily locking the modem
and won't allow the other access to the modem. For example the modem
is set on /dev/ttyS1. For qpage to access the device we've set the
access to crwxrwxrwx, otherwise it errors out. After a couple minutes
the permissions revert to crw------- with uucp as the owner, retaining
the admit group which we've setup for it. I need to prevent whatevers
reverting the permissions. A lock file is likewise dropped
into /var/spool/qpage. I'm aware that lockfiles are necessary to
prevent device contention, but in this case there doesn't seem to be
anything accessing the device.

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Whenever downloading using netscape is interrupted by modem disconnection,
the NetScape 4.6.1 does not perform a "reget" to continue the download,
instead it does the "get" command to freshly download the file. This is
kind of a nuissance if one has to download a big 20MB using a 56K modem.
Does NetScape 4.6.1 provide a setup to change the "get" to a "reget"

AFAIK, IE5 does support a "reget" command.

my favorite "brand" is the plain white box you get at a small computer
shop. go down to your local <ethnic> neighborhood, and talk to the
builder of the system. tell them you want linux but are concerned
about compatibility. they may even have linux experience! get a
parts list. check for support against, e.g., redhat's hardware
compatibility list. go back, adjust parts as needed.

because
*) they will work with you
*) they build to your specifications
*) special orders not a problem - you can call out specific parts
*) mostly generic parts without linux isssues
*) convenient for warrentee repair/upgrade
*) supports the local economy

Yes. Each user has their own vitual PC, and their own location
in the Linux filesystem for their files, (Usually in the directory
$HOME/win). In the normal setup, if there is a problem with Windows
the damage is limited to only the one user's space. And the files
used under Windows are really LInux files, so all the normal
file access permissions apply, so you can really make things
read-only or unreadable to protect any files you want to share.

I just installed Mandrake 6.0, and under both KDE and Gnome, I get
massive flickering whenever I do just about anything, such as typing,

inch to the right of the actual window for a brief instant, and then
being drawn in the correct place. I previously had Redhat 5.1 and KDE
1.1 installed on the system, and did not have this problem. I
speculated that the XF86Config file was the culprit, but I had saved the
previous one and was able to use it, but this did not solve the problem.

I am using a S3 Trio64-based video card. My system is a Pentium Pro 150
