Problem: Bitmap fonts suck!

If you know the fonts are going be too big in your main audience's
browser, just make the fonts smaller than usual.

Look at the font settings in other Linux users pages; but, don't be
surprised if they used a windows program to write the page. A while
back, Applixware got slammed with flames for using Frontpage.

Well, if you just want all of your mail sent to address a from address
b, create a ~/.forward file with a line holding the address where you
want the mail to go. If you want to forward a particular piece of mail,
that's client specific. Some mail clients have the "f" key bound to this
action.

Linux makes for a great printer server. If it prints in postscript it
will print in Linux.

Printers that print in dos (not dos terminal window) will print in
Linux. Try a dos boot disk and use the PrintScreen Key or
dir /w /p | lp1 to test (print file.txt works for some)

Dual boot and use both? Don't worry, it's ok to use multiple os's.

For some reason I can no longer cd to a directory and just type the

'perl /dir/script.pl'

Have I missed something here or is my shell not behaving properly?

Well, I guess I am one who would care. I would rather that the kernel
can recover my memory and restart my program than have the whole thing
crash and need a reboot. If I were writing drivers, I would especially
want to have some kind of recovery without reboot, rather than having
the kernel crash because a driver I was testing crashed.

Besides, Amigan's are used to a modular OS where every piece of the OS
sends messages to the pieces it interfaces with (Exec, Layers,
Intuition, etc.), and, by extension through ARexx, even programs can
regularly talk to each other, and even become super programs (working as
one), even when from different vendors. Since the QNX Neutrino OS works
essentially the same way, it looks like a better fit.

How does Linux (by the way, there has been a heated discussion here in
comp.sys.amiga.misc about how Linux is pronounced, and how you pronounce
your name, perhaps you could clear that up as well) handle interprocess
communications, or is it even supported by the kernel?

Also, Amigans are used to being able to dynamically load and unload
libraries, devices, drivers, etc., can Linux do this as well, or do
things like drivers and file systems _have_ to be compiled into the
kernel?

Well, they (QNX) are obviously aming at a different market with the QNX
Neutrino/Photon "Personal QNX" they are looking at introducing in
conjunction with Phase5. I have wanted to use QNX for quite some time
now, but never saw a price, never saw it on shelves, never saw any
software for it. If this "personal" version takes off, it may very well
be a great OS for many people. Surely it will be great for budding and
amateur scientists, experimenters in Ham Radio and Computer Science, and
other hobyist markets. Whether it will garner the lucrative game and
business developers who write for Windows/Dos remains to be seen. Then
again, the same could be said for whatever Amiga comes up with, now that
Jim Collas is no longer with them.

Whether either (Linux or QNX) can become a consumer OS remains to be
seen. I have a friend at work who is a staunch supporter of Linux, but
freely admits that it is not the OS for first time computer users,
Grandpa, or anyone else who just wants to turn on the computer, click on
an icon, do their work (or play), quit and shut down. I don't know that
Win9x exactly fills that bill, either, what with all the rebooting,
reloading, and reinstalling one has to do just to have a stable (I use
the term loosly, very loosly) system. It is certainly not as easy to
install a program under Win9x as it is under AmigaDos, nor as easy to
get rid of everything associated with that program. I have not taken
the Linux plunge, yet (need a better computer first), but, if things
don't improve in the Amiga scene by next spring, I will probably do so.

Well, I guess you are a busy man, but again, thanks for dropping by,

Paul

Did you use "startx" ? If so, your configuration is probably wrong
somewhere. Your video hardware shouldn't be a problem. Try XF86Setup
with xvidtune to adjust the video timings.

There's a steep learning curve initially, but if you stick with it the

Why buy retail? Try http://www.cheapbytes.com in the future. I'm liking
debian these days. I like their package management better than rpms.

Drives larger than 8.0 Gigs aren't recognized by some older partitioning
tools. Other than that, what you've listed should be well supported.

Yes, there are several better ways. Do you have pppconfig with your

seem to work.

I want to deny telnet access from everyone but people in my domain.
This is what I have in hosts.deny:

in.telnetd: ALL EXCEPT .jps.net

I've tried

in.telnetd: ALL : DENY EXCEPT .jps.net

I've tried in.telnetd: ALL in hosts.deny and an entry in hosts.allow for
my domain and that still doesn't work. Cany anyone help me out with
this? So far whatever I do just denies telnet access from everyone.

If you installed it via a makefile (e.g. 'make install') then you
actually want 'make uninstall'. 'make clean' typically removes compiled
programs from the source directory, so you can recompile a program (e.g.
one with a bug)

I had a similar problem ....

I was able to send mail to local users internally to my
system, but not able to "pop" mail using my netscape mail
client.

I fixed the problem by downloading the "qpopper" program
from www.qualcomm.com.

I compiled and installed the program as per instructions.
Tested andDdbugged the installation as per the
documentation, and now everything works perfectly!

This might be a solution to your problem, or it might be
right off the track.

Another reason that mail doesn't work properly, is that you
may not have the MX (mail exchanger) records in your DNS
setup correctly configured.

By the way, you are restarting the sendmail and named
daemons after you make changes to the configurations aren't
you?
