Sounds like at a minimum, you need to rerun lilo so it knows where your
root partition is. You'll need to have the system up in order to be
able to edit /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo. You might be able to bring
the system up with "linux root=/dev/hda7 1". Then again you might not.
I've had pretty good luck with using the Tom's mini linux distribution
for fixing problems like this. It's a linux dist that fits on a single
floppy and does not require a seperate resucue disk. It's a pretty
handy tool to carry in the toolbox.

If your system is a standalone and you dial in to your ISP
occasionally, then you can put whatever you want in the hostname and
domainname boxes. You should only worry about IP addresses and so on if
you have an Ethernet card (or other network card I guess), which it
sounds like you don't.

I'm too much of a newbie to solve your problem, except to say that
NS4.72US and XFree86-3.3.6 are working for me fine. I upgraded to the
RH6.2 beta and all the XFree86 latest. Maybe the upgraded files would
solve it.

It sounds like your PPP is either dropping the DHCP supplied DNS
address, or your ISP is not sending it correctly. Either way you can
fix the problem by hardwiring your ISP's DNS server IP addresses in
your /etc/resolv.conf file.

It looks as thought *those* lines are correct. However, as a bare
minimum I ALWAYS specify ErrorLog and TransferLog for each virtual
domain. It makes it a whole lot easier to troubleshoot problems. Also
you need to make sure you use a browser that sends the DomainName
header with each get request.

Put a 1>/dev/null at the end of your cron job. STDERR will still email

You'll have to edit /etc/syslog.conf. You could send the named

It sounds like you are trying to use Netscape to reach the web server
running on your own machine? 127.0.0.1 should work if the loopback
interface is running (try ifconfig and look for the "lo" adapter). That
should solve the connection problem. As far as the A record message, a
properly configured DNS server will have an A record for localhost,
pointing to the address 127.0.0.1 so if any clients ask for the name
localhost, they get directed back to their own computer.

Subject: ANNOUNCE: vsound-patch (capturing RealPlayer audio)
Date: Sat, 04 Mar 2000 01:56:24 +0000

Hi all,

Last week there was a thread of articles concerning the possibility
of capturing the RealAudio data stream as it travelled over the
network. Phil Hunt suggested that it would be easier to capture the
audio data when it is sent to /dev/dsp for playing. At that stage I
mentioned that there was already a program (vsound) to do this, that
it didn't work for the G2 RealPlayer and that I had managed to fix it.

I have now released a patch to the vsound program. I have placed the
patch and the original program sources along with some documentation
at:

    http://www.zip.com.au/~erikd/vsound/

The original freshmeat announcement for vsound was:

"VSound is a sort of like a `virtual audio loopback cable'. That is,
it allows you to record the output audio stream of a program (similar
to connecting a loopback cable to the line in and line out jacks on
the sound card, and recording the sound from the line in jack, but
without the DA/AD conversion losses). One possible use for this
application is as part of a RealAudio to wav file converter."

Enjoy,
Erik

Hi!, Name is Jeremy
Strange problem. Everything comes up, everything looks normal according
to pcmcia, no errors, ifconfig and routes are ok, the only error I get
is the last line after I do a "pcmcia start" or insert the card, I get
"eth0: lost link beat"
I cannot ping to the laptop or vise versa. I know I have my networking
up because I have more than one computer on the network. Again the only
error I get in the logs is that "lost link beat", anyone know what that
is anyway? The link light on my hub is lit, but the one on my card is
not. ifconfig reports TX but no RX. I also tried to install slakware,
same thing, but instead of a solid link light I get a 1s on / 1s off
blinking link light, both the huh and card blink this time, and again
according to all the drivers and pcmcia files the card is up and
working, but no-go. Any Ideas? - Thanks in advance!!

This is probably not a very smart thing to do. Sendmail will negotiate
the correct protocol to use (ESMTP or SMTP), regardless of what the
other end is talking. You must have a very specific reason for wanting
to do such a thing (like an ESTMP mailer on the other end that is ill
behaved).

If you are really determined, I would buy a bat book from O'Reilly and
you'll find the answer to this and any other question you have about
sendmail.

Depending on fat your wallet is, you may want to use an Axis camera,
which has a built in webserver to serve up the picture. Then on your
webpage to include the picture, you just put in a tag like

<img src="http://mycamera.mydomain.com/pic001.jpg">

Seems easy huh? If you want to associate a domain name with a dynamic
IP address, you'll have to use one of the public DynDNS sites. I used
to use ml.org, but I think they are no longer.

Sound like you've got a few things a little confused. Why would you put
an HTML file in your cgi-bin directory. You might want to try sticking
them in the document root instead. It also sounds like apache is
running as the user nobody and the file you are trying to access has no
read access for the user nobody. Do an ls -l on the files and *ALL*
intermediate directories and make sure that user nobody has read
permissions (execute permissions for directories).

If you do a fresh install and don't have any data to worry about,
remove the old /usr/local/var/mysql directory and then rerun the
mysql_db_install script that comes with mysql. This will build the
default permissions database that does allow root access, no password
from localhost.

Welp, I guess it's getting down to things don't print the same way on
everyone's computer. As you can see from this thread, there have been
two "just use lpr's", two "defaults" and one lpr % s. Either someone's
bulling me or things are different from hardware to hardware.
I'm not asking anyone to eat my meals for me, just direction to get the
answer myself. It doesn't appear in the HOWTOs or MANs. Guess that

Please check /etc/passwd and see if root's shell is set to /bin/bash,
also check to see if root's .profile starts with bash and the correct
path. Something sounds weird, I've seen these messages when some
tries the following at the begining of a shell script:

#!/bni/bash

Notice the path is incorrect there is no /bni it should be /bin. Try
using su without the -. I hope this helps.
