I have very good experirnce with USRobotics.

Make sure you do not buy a WIN modem, they will NOT work. Just make sure
that whatever you buy has jumpers such that you can configure IRQ and
the Port. I prefer internal modems, some other people I know like to
have externals, the choice is up to you. Also check out the modem HowTo:

http://www.linux.org/help/ldp/howto/Modem-HOWTO.html

Have fun.

I wrote a review of the book 2 years ago
(http://starship.python.net/crew/amk/writing/unix-haters.html).  A
sizable number of the flaws are minor things that are readily fixed by
patching a particular tool, to make 'tar -cvf dummy.tar' not create an
empty archive and that sort of thing. I did think the chapter on X was
pretty accurate, though; X makes many things too difficult, but no
other living system provides the same capabilities.

So Python's only cross-platform choices were to mimic the C/POSIX API or
invent its own new x-platform API; only one of those is realistic (as Java
proves every day <wink>).

My situation is a little different:

I am using Windows 2000 in my first IDE harddisk, and Redhat 6.2 on
my first SCSI harddisk. During installation of 6.2, I made the mistake of
choosing KDE workstation instead of custom. So Redhat installed LILO
into the boot partition of my IDE drive. So when I boot my system now,
LILO comes up.

I have since changed LILO's configuration so that it boots into Windows2000
by default instead of Linux. I can elect to boot linux by typing linux at
LILO's
boot prompt when it comes up. I guess I don't need to get System Commander
afterall :-)

    How would I analyze my swap space to see how it is being
used and if it would pay to up size it or down size it or leave it
alone.
    Also, how would I resize my existing swap partition assuming
I have the space and tell the system how much there is. Right
now I think that I created a swap partition that may be overly

Do you have XFree86-devel installed? The libs it is looking for
typically look like 'libX11.a'.

Subject: SuSE 6.0 - 6.4 upgrade and kernel hassels
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 16:13:15 GMT

I've recently upgraded from SuSE 6.0 to SuSE 6.4 (I wanted the Glibc2.1
upgrade to be as painless as possible. ;> ), and am now having, oddly enough,
kernel problems.

I've been compiling the 2.2.14 kernel pretty well since the day it came out,
and have never had any problems like I'm having now! For some strange reason,
I can't make the 2.2.14 kernel from kernel.org work with my mouse. Under 6.0
I had it working, but now it won't. For some reason, the 2.2.14 kernel shipped
with SuSE works with my mouse, but not the kernel.org version. This is a little
troubling, because I want to be able to upgrade to the 2.4.* kernels without
having to wait for SuSE 6.5!

This might be related somehow;

On bootup while initializing the serial ports, I get several (dozen) messages
along the lines of;

/etc/conf.modules is newer than /usr/lib/modules/2.2.14/modules.dep

(or something similar. It doesn't appear in dmesg, and has since scrolled
off the screen in tty10). What causes this? For the record, I also get it
on a SuSE 6.2 box I have running elsewhere.

I get the same message when running the kernel.org 2.2.14 kernel, but not
as often. The message seems to appear when initializing the serial ports,
and possibly when initializing other devices, but I can't be sure. (I never
thought I'd say this, but my system is too fast ;> ).

Any help is appreciated!

Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 16:21:17 GMT

I've been given an assignment to create a script to create 100 hundred
dummy processes. Currently the method I'm using to create my process is
fork. However, when I call fork from my perl script it forks the
calling process which is the execution of the perl script. My result is
an endless loop. My question is how can I call create a dummy process
from something other than the calling program?
I know you can do something like execl("/bin/ls") but when I type this
in from the shell in it gives me an error.

Can someone give me the exact syntax to use to create a dummy process
from the shell prompt?

Thanks for the help

(Also if /var/catman is full)

In addition, catman may then end up with 0 length files etc, so man
may further refuse to work. You may need to clear these out.

(catman contains a cache of formatted man pages).

CD-RWs work really well under Linux. However, people have reported
problems with some Sony drives and the Iomega ZipCD--these don't quite
support the full ATAPI command set, it seems. I bought a Philips 460RW
4/4/16 for $160 about 6 months ago; works really well. You can get
something faster for cheaper now.

Read the CD-RW HOWTO:  http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html
and take a look at "backburner" on freshmeat.net for some utilities to
make backing up/restoring much easier.

*sigh*

Was your code something like

  # let's invoke something like 2^100 children...
  my $ct = 0;
  for ($ct=0; $ct < 100; $ct++) {
      fork();
  }

which will NOT work (from the POV of needing exactly 100)?

In Perl/C, fork *will* suffice, but there's something more you
should check.

Hint: parent and child get different return values. I won't be
more specific about how to use it, 'coz it IS an assignment and
presumably the class isn't on Reading USENET.

Open up a whole bunch of programs at once--everything you usually use at
the same time, like 3 Netscrape windows, 5 or 6 xterms, xmms, GIMP, etc.
Then take a look at the output of "free". If the swap space being used is
> 50%, you really don't have enough swap.  If it's < 20%, you probably
have too much. The rule of thumb in the past was "swap=2xRAM" but that's
no longer quite valid since RAM has gotten relatively cheap. If you're a
"normal user" and have > 256M of swap, you probably have too much. 128M
of swap is a pretty good value in these days of cheap multigigabyte
drives.

It's most likely not in ld's search path. -L/usr/X11R6/lib is a pretty

Your swap space is used every time your physical ram reaches it limit.
The amount that is suggested on most documents that I have read is your
swap file should be twice the amount of ram you have available.
Example:  64 meg Ram= 128meg swap space
Too much swap space will not hurt you other than wasting space on your
hard drive that may be needed by another / .
