Hi,
We have a RHat6.0 Linux 2.2.5-15 and a dial up connection to the
internet no DNS installed. We connect every hour to retrieve our mail
(our ISP acts our mail relay) The /var/log/maillog is starting to fill
up with ' Connection timeout errors ' coming up mainly when the server
is on line. It seems to be random not being linked to any pc in
particular. We use Outlook 97 as mail client on PCs

I'm using Corel Linux on my desktop and I've just downloaded Realplayer.
Should I install it as root and put it in /usr/local/Realplayer or
install it logged in as a normal user in which case it would have to be
installed in the users home dir. If I install it as root the install
puts an icon on the KDE desktop for me and installs the Netscape plugin.
These settings then only apply to root. Then do I log in as a normal
user and manually create the icon on the users desktop and run the
install again for the Netscape plugin?

Certain combinations of memory sizes do not work with those old 486

Why would you want to start with Mandrake6 when Mandrake7 is out? It's
best to start with the most current distro to get all the patches and
security fixes.

You are missing the link there that says "I already have a browser". There
is enough information there that if you know how to set up a typical ppp
connection using pap authentication (not a login script) it will work
fine. Just make sure that you visit their home page after you login. You
are not supposed to use it for demand connections or automatic redial.

I've got a RH6.1 Linux server running autofs. I've also got a Windows box
with a bunch of shares. The Windows client is named viper. The
problem is that I can't access the Viper shares through autofs. I have a
directory called /viper. In it there are directories c and mp3. The
problem is that the mount doesn't work. If I change directories to
/viper/mp3, I get "No such file or directory." If I shut down automount, I
can see the directories, but they won't mount.

Important info is below. Can anyone help?

Output from
'smbclient -L viper' is

The first thing you may want to do is review the Hard-Disk-Upgrade mini

I've seen this on lots of machines, over the years, and have always put it
down to low memory. I.e. you've got emacs open which uses quite a bit of
mem, and if you've got netscape open aswell and maybe a few other bits
and pieces it all adds up. Try adding a bit more RAM or just adding a bit
more swap space it could very possibly clear your problem up.

You'll need support, and I'd suggest some time (maybe a month or
so) to play with a test bex and get it working the way you want
it before putting it into active service.

Good luck.

Put them in a directory that's in your path, and make them
executable chmod +x thefile_name and run the file.

You'd probably get better and more efficient binaries if you
d/l the source and build your own binaries.

What's the exact error message and what are you typing
on the command line?

I've just found an interesting section in the NFS HOWTO
about suid in section 6.1 Client Security.

Again what is the command that you're typing, and don't mess
with it if it's not actually causing you any problems except
when you're messing around with it.

SPARC uses SILO, not LILO. You don't have to rerun 'silo' after a kernel

: Either that, or compile your kernel with a minimum of drivers that may be
: causing it to crash.

Actually, I tried that first.

The RedHat distro I'm using came with the sources for the running kernel
in /usr/src/linux. I tried those many times. After a while, I figured
out that I was compiling in drivers that weren't going to work (IPX, for
instance), so I pared it down to the BARE minimum.

At that point, 'make vmlinux' and 'make modules' work, but the 'make'
process on a SPARC isn't like on Intel. It doesn't copy the kernel
anywhere for you (I checked the timestamp on all the 'vmlinu[xz]' files I
could find).

It seems like there's some step I need to do before or after I copy
/usr/src/linux/vmlinux to /boot/vmlinux (SILO supports both compressed and
uncompressed) so that it will run. I know SILO finds the kernel, but it
won't execute.

I've never done kernel debugging before, although I'd be willing to dive
in to get this solved. I figure it'll help me when it's time to tackle
Linux on the Mac IIci and the Alpha anyway (yes, those are future
projects).

Thanks!

While Lexmark does have some network printers and some listed as Solaris
ready that I would suspect could work under Linux, the Z11 is probably
similar to my 5700 in that it is so brain dead, it is not even recognized
as being online and will not even print plain text on its own. It uses
bitmaps for all printing.

I did see one driver under development that would just print text, and
someone else had a driver that would print 300x300 color, but I do not
have links for those and not sure how to find them. These printers are
not listed on the ghostscript site, although, they may have a device that
could output a suitable bitmap, if you could figure out how to communicate
with the printer.

Fortunately I also have an HP4L Laserjet that works great under Linux.

I don't know about dpkg - but comparing it to rpm, here are the features
I miss:

1. Quick query - pkg_info -aI isn't as fast as rpm -qa. I guess this comes
from rpm's database as opposed to filesystem walking with pkg_*.
2. rpm -q apache, gives me everything I want to know. With FreeBSD, I need
   to first do

        $ pkg_info -aI | grep apache
        $ pkg_info -L apache-x.y.z

3. Conflict detection. If one package overwrites files from another, pkg_*
   doesn't warn me.

4. Handling binaries. Because rpm has a fixed hearder followed by a
compressed archive, it can read the contents of a binary package,
   without decompressing it.
