Hello,

What is the best freeware firewall/proxy for RedHat Linux?

What do you use? Are you satisfied with the security and
performance from this firewall/proxy software?

Thanks,

Please read section 5.4 of the Filesystems HOWTO at
<URL:http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Filesystems-HOWTO.html>.

The NT OS Loader + Linux mini-HOWTO at
<URL:http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html> might
also be interesting but notice that the current version was written in
1997.

If you search for "NTFS" at <URL:http://www.linuxdoc.org/> you will
find loads of other sources of information.

If you are also running anacron (a random anacron URL is
<URL:http://lwn.net/lwn/980226/a/anacron.html>), then the daily
scripts will probably be started as soon as your computer is booted
(or, as in my case, 5 mins after). Anacron will affect the time when
the daily/weekly/monthly scripts are executed depending on when you
booted your computer.

Red Hat seems to be the most widely available.

I took the plunge a few days ago and installed SuSE 6.4 on my old
Pentium 1 MX200 without any major dramas.

One feature that had attracted me to the SuSE distribution was the new
user-friendly YaST2 installation tool, but it turned out that 48mb Ram
wasn't enough for this and I had to install using standard YaST anyway.

This still worked fine, was able to configure XFree86 3.3.6 even
though it couldn't find a driver for my Dell monitor.

I had foolishly forgotten to note down my Awe32 soundcard settings
before trashing Win98, but the suggested Soundblaster defaults
seem to work just fine.

However, I wouldn't recommend this exercise to someone new to computers.

As most of the software I need is on Win98 I will still use my new pc
most, but I am getting to like that KDE 1.2 desktop :)

The only drawback is that the dreaded Netscape 4.72 bloatware is the
default browser for displaying Linux help within KDE, will have to
figure out how to get rid of this!

That has nothing to do with the card; you don't have ping installed/in your
path if that's the case. Though it is a bit strange to not have it
installed as part of a default.

You should be able to use modconf (modconf is a standard Linux utility,
isn't it?) to create the correct entries for your Ethernet card.

Hi all,

I'm running Red Hat 6.2 and Gnome/WindowMaker. I've successfully set-up
my sound card. However, a peculiar thing is happening. Whenever a
sound is emitted after a period of silence, the speakers "spike" at the
beginning of the sound. By this, I mean that they emitting a short
cracking sound. If sounds are immediately emitted afterwards, no
cracking sound is observed. Once a period of silence (on the order of
seconds) has elapsed, emitting a sound once again causes this spike at
the beginning.

Any ideas? I have a similar set-up at home which doesn't do this, so
I'm thinking that perhaps it's just the speakers.

Unfortunately the vast majority of today's Internet "point-n-click"
lusers will be forever clueless newbies who believe "thuh web" is the
whole ball of wax.

Only a fraction even know about Usenet (or other services for that matter),
and most of those that do have absolutely no concept of how anything works.
Since these rocket scientists access everything through their web browsers,
they "think" that a newsgroup is a "site," post HTML crap, quote hundreds
of lines of text to add a one-line comment (can't expect 'em to master
a simple text editor now, can we?), etc. Feh.

In the good old days one needed a certain level of technical expertise
just to participate either in Usenet or the Internet. Today both pretty
much belong to the clueless simply by virtue of their crushing numbers.
You want these people to understand the difference between "web" and
"Usenet?" Hell, many of them have worked with personal computers for years,
even a decade or more, but still can't handle basic operations such as
copying a file even *with* the point-and-click crutches provided for
them. Forever clueless is the watchword here.

Frankly if I didn't need it as a technical resource for work I wouldn't
bother with the Net at all at this point. Here's to the days when every
Net user knew what "send it to /dev/null" means...

Maybe you need to modify the rcapache (or rchttpd) script and /etc/httpd.conf (and any
other configuration files) to point to the place where apache resides. Also you might
need to modify PATH variables. Then mount your 2nd HDD wherever you want and put
apache there. (first put apache there and then modify the scripts) Also maybe a tarred
package might be better than deb or rpm.

Subject: ftape 4.02 make error RH 6.2 (2.2.14)
Date: Thu, 08 Jun 2000 06:41:21 -0700

I am a newbie to Linux, ftape, etal ... so please bear with me.

I have installed Linux Red Hat 6.2 (kernel 2.2.14) from the box and
included the sources to be installed in the /usr/src/linux directory.

In this directory I ran the make and make dep inorder to create the
dependencies needed by ftape (according to the ftape README, ftape
requires the .config file and dependencies before in can be built).
Note: I used the all the defaults in the linux make utility to create
the .config file in /usr/src/linux as it looked to me like the MCONFIG
file was only going to look in this file to determine my CPU processor
information).

I then tried to run "make" in /var/local/ftape-4.02 and received the
following:

fdc-io.c: In function `fdc_interrupt_wait':
fdc-io.c:433: structure has no member named `timeout'
fdc-io.c:454: structure has no member named `timeout'
make[2]: *** [fdc-io.o] Error 1

make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/local/ftape-4.02/ftape'
make: *** [all] Error 2

Can anyone tell me what this means and what I need to do to correct it?

I'm installing ftape to use with an Iomega Ditto EZ, parallel port on a
Pentium 586 MMX (233mhz).

Did I forget anything?

Thanks in advance for any assistance ANY one can provide,

Jeanne

Hello, all. The following is a message posted by a friend of mine, and he's
indesperate neede of assistance. We're looking for any solutions, any
pointers to reference materials, or anybody else who's experienced a similar
problems (specifically; what chipet you're using, what kernel, and what
happens when the problem occurs).

Thanks greatly in advance!

Newsgroups: comp.os.linux
Subject: hda: lost interrupt hangs SuSE box
Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2000 21:43:17 GMT

I recently got a new computer with an ALI chipset, and I'm running SuSE as my
only OS; I have been able to resolve all hardware support issues with the
machine except for one, and it's a biggy;

During periods of high CPU activity and uncached disk access, a message will
appear on the tty to the effect of:

hda: lost interrupt

at this stage, the machine is locked up tight - I have to use the reset switch
to reboot it.

I am using kernel 2.2.14, with and without DMA support, and with and without
DMA set in the BIOS; there is a 6.4GB Fujitsu (UDMA 66) on the primary IDE
controller as master, and an ATAPI CD-ROM as secondary master. This chipset is
an ALI ALADDIN M1543C/1542 on a 100MHz bus.

As I mentioned, the lockup occurs during heavy activity, or alternatively, at
a random interval of about every 17 - 20 hours. It's quite imperative that I
find a solution to this problem quickly, any assistance would be greatly
appreciated.
