Have you run hardware diagnostics? I don't know of any good OSS diags
EXCEPT for a good RAM diagnostic: MEMTEST86, which you can get from:
http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86
It may be worthwhile to boot up that diagnostic and let it run overnight
some night when you can spare the machine.
Good luck!

We have need of a person who can install Debian on an IBM Aptiva peecee.
This is a one shot install. The peecee is in a place called something like
"Hollywood", which is near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Thanks!

Quake uses svgalib for the mouse, not gpm. In fact I heard that it is
best to killall gpm before running quake (I used a script to do that, run
q2 and then restart gpm when quitting).
But the problem is that you need to change your mouse in
/etc/vga/libvga.config from 'mouse Microsoft' to 'mouse PS2'. As you
found out, your ammo disappears rather quickly otherwise.

Why do you think it is being loaded?
You show a load average of 1.07, 1.03, 1.01 and 96.2% idle
49 processes and 48 of those are sleeping
If you are looking at the memory line? Linux will use memory as cache
which is normal.
If you want to see what kind of load linux will take? Try running a
bunch of seti@home work units. I had 24 running at one time just to see
if it would do it. It never complained or crashed and I still had the
power to run a webserver, mail server, proxy server, junkbuster,
firewall and a few other things and surf the web all at the same time
with about a 15% load average. It was a little bit slower but it didn't
have any trouble. Though I only run 2 of them 24/7 now.

well, to get these libstdc+++, you are going to have to download,
compile and install each and every one of those versions of gcc/egcs.
even if you didn't want that particular compiler.

the libstdc++ rpm is accumulationg the "compatibility" libraries in
binary form.

rpm isn't proprietary. rpm is released under GPL. in fact, many
distributions use it. you can hate it if you like, but at least get
your definitions straight.

You've just about described every distribution (apart from the mini ones)
out there...

Red Hat is up to 6.2 now... All the distributions are very different now
from how they were back in 1998. Red HAt do have a bit of a reputation for
trying to get things out quickly without proper testing, and the general
consensus is to not buy Red Hat x.0 or x.1 (the problems are usually fixed
by x.2).

There is a Hardware compatibility list out there somewhere, if that's what
you want... Linux tends not to have "drivers" in the windows sense, instead
it has Kernel modules....
Can't remember where the list is though, sorry.
