By installing lex. (usually comes as the flex - fast lex - package)

One of those two files is a backup of the other... Look at the XFree log
file (/val/log/XFree86.something.log on my system) : it tells you which
configuration file the server is actually getting loaded.

Err .. how were you planning on specifying them! They must have some
kind of pattern to them, no? Or you would have to give the names
individually somewhere, somewhen, whether in a filelist or on the
commandline.

So come clean. What is the pattern? And when you tell us it, tell
yourself it, and write "cat the_pattern > bigfile.txt".

Please go buy a book!

And what did you assume about the book? That your old dos manual would

If the filenames are in a textfile, you might try the command "cat
FileWithNames | xargs cat > OutputFile". The filenames should be separated
by whitespace (spaces, tabulators or newlines) in FileWithNames.

I'm a bit reluctant to experiment with the kernel at this point - any idea

I have a generic 486-66 with the 540 meg BIOS limitation. I am running
Debian 2.1 on the machine. I have two partitions on the machine. Hda1 is
9 gigs and linux swap is 128 megs. Linux installed just fine. The machine
boots up just fine. I don't understand it, but it works. This machine
runs my file server for all the Win machines in the house. No monitor,
mouse or keyboard. It is soon to take over internet routing duties from my
personal machine.

I did nothing special to make this work. I put the CD in the drive, put
the boot floppy in the floppy drive and booted up. The install worked just
as it has on any Pentium I have installed on, just slower. I had to put 32
megs of ram in the thing to get the install completed in less than five
days. After that, I pulled 16 megs from it and it boots and handles its
duties just fine.

        Why would you assume that? If there's one thing Unix is
scruplous about, it's about isolating utility into logical units. Using
one routine to both reproduce files and concatenate files is a violation
of the Way of Unix.

All of my plugins for both galeon and mozilla have suddenly stopped working.

Everything had been working great, albeit java was slow slow slow. But then in
the past week I did a bunch of upgrades and I've just noticed that none of my
plugins work anymore.

I'm running Linux Mandrake 7.1, and mozilla 0.8 and galeon 0.10.2 both
installed from (rh6) RPMs. Just before I noticed that this problem was
occuring everything was working fine---if I started either galeon or mozilla
from the command line I could see the plugins being registered (and the
java-vm taking an age to get going).

However, last week I installed Ximian red-carpet 0.9.2, and using it I
upgraded my Ximian GNOME installation and upgraded a bunch of stuff in the
Mandrake 7.1 channel. I also installed the Real Player 8.0 from RPM from
real.com. Now the java_vm does not start when I start either mozilla or
galeon, the plugins are not registered at startup, and if I go to a page that
has a flash animation or a java applet on it I am told that I don't have the
plugins installed. But I've checked and they are still there just like they've
always been. I've tried re-installing both flash and java and neither does any
good. I suspect that something (the Real Player 8 RPM) has changed something,
but what? If anyone knows a straightforward fix for this I would be so
grateful.

TIA,

Darren

Subject: $LD_LIBRARY_PATH not being read on Free Desktop site WorkSpot.COM?
Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 19:46:54 -0500

Hi, has anyone messed around with WorkSpot.com? They let you have a free
desktop account that you can get to via the web through VNC. Anyway, I want
to install X-Chat on my account, but they don't have the latest shared libs
for gtk and such, so I got the proper deb packages, extracted them into my
home directory and set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable appropriately, that is:

I put the following shared libs that are missing from their system:
        libgmodule-1.2.so.0 => not found
        libglib-1.2.so.0 => not found
        libperl.so.5.6 => not found
        libpython1.5.so.0.0 => not found
        libgtk-1.2.so.0 => not found
        libgdk-1.2.so.0 => not found
into ~/usr/lib
2) Then did set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/myaccount/usr/lib

3) I run xchat, and still get this message:
./xchat: error in loading shared libraries
libgmodule-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

So, even with gmodule and friends in the directory and of course
LD_LIBRARY_PATH has been set, so I have no idea what could be wrong.....any
ideas???? I hope they haven't modified ld.so to not look at that variable.

I tried the same thing on my own RedHat box and it worked fine. That is, I
temporarily moved one of the needed libs from /usr/ to my home dir, and did
all that. It didn't work until I set the LD... variable to point to my home
dir.

They are using Debian, but as far as I know from the manpages, LD..PATH
should be examined...

Thanks,
e

Korn shell does not do "tab completion". If you use "vi editing"
mode in ksh, then you can do "filename completion" by <Esc>\ to
complete the filename (or command name), but if the name is not
unique, you have to use <Esc>* or <Esc>= to see the file names
which match.

SuSE 7.1 booted to runlevel 3. When I run konqueror (from KDE2) remotely

from. If I close konquerer, those processes remain and if I try to close
ssh it hangs saying that there are processes still running over that
connection.

Then I have to open another ssh session to kill off the kde processes one
by one. Just wondering if there was some way to have konqueror
automatically clean up after itself after running remotely?
