reasons), you can get a sort-of-global install using
install_systemwide (but i hate this).

as for freedos, unpack it somewhere in /var/lib/dosemu
and tweak /etc/dosemu.conf (variable $_hdimage).

serial support is good.
run dosemu as root for everything and you will be
fine.
