I guess it's a problem with your DOSEMU being frozen while switched away from it. Otherwise you would have the problem that the running DOSEMU might be able to corrupt your screen while in X, for instance, or that the video card is in a different state than the DOS program expects it to be when you switch back (because background emulation doesn't work well). I heard some reports that IPX servers expect some "sanding" to occur from clients and I don't think that DOSEMU does that itself while in "frozen" state -- but then I'm entirely unfamiliar to the IPX code.
