You can install both run-time libs at the same time.
I can only give you the instauctions for RedHat, since that's what I
have.
Install gtk+-1.0.x:
rpm -ivh gtk+-1.0.x-x.i386.rpm
don't upgrade to 1.1.x, just install alongside:
rpm -ivh --force gtk+-1.1.x-x.i386.rpm
if you need the development libs, you can only install one of them at a
time.
i.e.
rpm -ivh gtk+-devel-1.0.x-x.i386.rpm
-OR-
rpm -ivh gtk+-devel=1..1.x-x.i386.rpm
