  Do you have a .rhosts that might be short-circuiting something that might
otherwise fail?

  Once rlogin'ed, can you spawn new shells, either interactive or
non-interactive?

  You might try running 'login' after rlogging in to see if it has anything
interesting to say... maybe it no longer has execute permission?  Maybe the
binary is corrupt?  Have you run e2fsck since the problem occurred?
