Whe have to find out where the "network unreachable" comes from, then.
The client needs to be able to get to the linux box, and the linux box
needs to be able to reach the outside. So test each of those.

Did you follow the instructions in the HOWTO?
Also, your masquerade problems and your SOCKS problems may be, in fact,
be the same.
