Ping uses ICMP. ICMP doesn't have port numbers. To allow ping to
work, you must let through ICMP echo request and reply messages.
Traceroute normally uses UDP, but can be told to use ICMP with the -I option.
If using UDP, it uses port 33434, but can be told to use another port with
the -p option.
Oh, and I just found out all this by skimming through its man page. Don't
you have man pages installed on your system?
