If you have made backup to your files (eg. login) before installing shadow
you must restore them. I have the same problem and I had good intention
to backup my files wich are modified by shadow package. Another thing is 
to verify in another console before you install shadow if login works. 
Now , I think you must made a copy of "login" from another RH4.2 machine.
