I will answer your named question (#1) since I have more expertise in this one.
You need to have a "forwarders" directive in your configuration (named.conf).
The syntax:
forwarders        111.222.333.444    555.777.888.999

This example only lists 2 IPs, but you can put more.  This line simply tells
your named, if there is a host/domain that it does not handle by itself
(authoritative), it will look to the name servers in the forwarders line to
request information.  These are the IPs of your name servers provided by your
upstream provider.
