This was discussed on slashdot.org a few weeks ago. The general
consensus was that Cringely's article was nonsense.

Changing the default configuration to use encrypted passwords is
entirely sensible. Recent versions of Samba support encrypted
passwords as standard (older versions required that the DES support
was added separately, due to US encryption regulations).

A number of people pointed out the the articles which had supposedly
disappeared from Microsoft's knowledge base were still there (URLs
were posted).
