Hello,

I upgraded my SOHO network to 100 Base T HalfDuplex network and I am running
a nonswitching 100 Base T only-HUB.

I have one linux-server and three clients, two Windoze clients, Win95 and
one Win98 client, and one linux-client 2.0.36 on the LAN. The linux-server
is running linux 2.0.36 SuSE 6.0 (Pentium MMX200MHz, 96MB RAM).

100M ethernet-boards used:
Linux server is using epic100.c driver SMC Ethernet II.
All other are Realtek boards 8139.

MY PROBLEM SPEED:

ftp transfer rates (200MByte file for testing):

wu.ftpd is running on linux-server, started by inetd.
FTP-32 client version 95.08.19 from John A Junod.

linux client to linux-server both directions 3.5 MByte/sec :-I
linux-server to Win95/98-clients upload 3.5MByte/sec :-I

SLOW SLOW::
!!!Win95/98 download to the linux-server or other linux-client 1 MByte/sec
!!!!!! :-(((

Win95 download/upload to Win98 (using exceed ftpd on either pc) 2.3
Mbyte -->> BETTER than linux ??

same rates for smb - connections for mounted drives uploads from Win95/98 to
linux.

ifconfig reports no errors/overruns on the SMC device.

I changed via route the window and segment size: no effect.

I changed in the SMC-driver the receive-buffer count and size: no effect.

For testing I connected the linux-server crossover to the Win98 client and
got the 1MByte/s
as well :-((((. NO collisions at all!!!

I changed the cables : no effect.

SO THE HARDWARE IS OK but linux is so slow WHY?

I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK to WinNT!!

Please help somebody:

Is this a known problem?

Does somebody else has the same effect?

What kind of info does someone needs from me to come to an idea what the
cause of the problem is?

What can I do to get more performance for upload to the linux-server from
the windows clients?

Thanks for reading so far.

Rainer
