If you manually edited the smbd line in /etc/inetd.conf you should go and
check the syntax.
It's called netbios, not netbois ...
                      --               --

... and I have never read anything about calling smbd with the parameter
smbd.

I'm pretty sure that it's not being started - logfiles ?
