division by zero occurs while booting 2.2.0-pre8 kernel. it occurs while
detecting non existen eth1 network adapter. kernel 2.2.0-pre7 compiled
with same options works fine (i.e. without div by zero).

Make sure you have enabled the "Intel CPU type" config options which
are appropriate for you CPU. If you get this wrong, the behavior you
describe is what will be seen.
This is kernel configuration pilot error, not a bug. :-)
