I think you refer to CIDR (Clasless InterDomain Routing) notation. The /x
notation is the fixed bits of the ip address. CIDR it�s used to reduce the
number of entries in routing tables with consecutive C class ip addresses.
Instead of this short-notation, is also used a netmask in the classical style.
