I had the same rouble reported last week

This is a copy of my trouble report message.

Hope it will help you:

Linux 2.0.36  RedHat 5.2

Hello,

Reason of the problem I reported yesterday:

This is what /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo
should feel like:

DEVICE=lo
IPADDR=127.0.0.1
NETMASK=255.0.0.0
NETWORK=127.0.0.0
BROADCAST=127.255.255.255
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none

After having used netcfg, I found:

DEVICE=lo

All the remainder lines were removed.
Do not ask me why as well as the environment.

This when having during network activation the following
error messages and lo device unconfigured:

        ipcalc: ip address expected
        ipcalc: ip address expected
        ipcalc: ip address expected
        netmask: unknown interface
        netmask: Host name lookup failure

Have a nice week-end people
