Well try for the moment to stop for a while diald, fire up a terminal
emulator like minicom and do that ( all the modem that proclaim even the
smallest Hayes compatibility have this):
ATM0   <-- THE SPEAKER WILL SHUT UP FOR "EVER"

AT&W0  <-- STORE THAT IN YOUR PROFILE SO CAN BE LOADED ON POWER ON
AT&W1  <-- SAME AS ABOVE BUT IF YOUR DEFAULT PROFILE IS PROFILE 1

You're done, restart diald and enjoy the silence ;) !!!!

BTW, the command AT&Wn where n == the number of stored profile is used
in the most modems that I dealed with, but YMMV and may be mecessary to
consult the modem book.
