In order to work under Linux, the modem needs to have a UART.
The modems which don't work are `Winmodems', or `RPI' modems. These
rely on a (Windows-only) device driver to emulate some of the hardware
which is present in a real modem.
Note that because they omit some of the hardware which is present in a
real modem, they tend to be cheaper than real modems.
