What 3Com card do you have?
I think I also had your problem, if you also have a 3c905 card.
I met this problem on RH Linux 5.0, I installed the 3c905 card with
3c509 drivers, because I read it somwhere that it should work with
them. But it doesn't. It seem to work because you can ping the
localhost but from/to another machine you can't.
I read in some other place that it works but needs a patch, and a
little correction of the patch.
