first of all, I love you too!!!  ;-)

This ping thing really sounds strange.  It would help us to know what
distribution you're using (Red Hat, Debian, Slackware, etc..) and also the
kernel version.  Also, what shell is this user using?

Perhaps you're using an old kernel (when Linus T. was still a young fellow
and had lots of dreams).
