Not so long ago, someone on this list mentioned a company making
multiport (4 per slot) ethernet cards:

Apparently they work fine with linux, so it might be a good solution.
I guess there could be others too.
Another hint: shop around for motherboards... I noticed my new Super7 mb
does use one IRQ less (none for the PCI/ISA bridge?) than my previous mb.
Same applies for graphics cards, too (variable IRQ requirements).
