if you are willing to run nis then yes you can "link"
your passwd file to your yp map by appending the
following line to /etc/passwd:
+::::::
and then modifying your yp passwd file. i have
implimented this at my work, where new accounts
are genereated when our hr dept. fills out a web
based form. of course, as glynn clements mentions
you want the code that modifies the file in question
to be robust, and keep backups of the file in the case
of a problem.
