hi all,
thanx for the prompt reply on linux threads....,i am acting on the
advice and hope to solve the problem....

is there any way to fing out the order of the cards in the slots when
the m/c boots up.Like earlier, the cards used to come up in the order in
which they were installed i.e the first card was eth0,followed by eth1 and
eth2..(i have 3 cards) .But i had to remove the cards for some reason, and
when i did it again i find that the middle card is eth0,the last is eth1
and the first is eth2.I found that out by running a ping command to a
remote host, and swapping the RJ45 among each of the cards, the one with
which ping responded was the active interface(the routes had been set
likewise...)
my query is,is there any way to find out this order, except by the silly
way i was doing it?.What decides which cards will be assigned to which
eth-x??.is is a kernel level decision,or can it be forced by certian
settings somewhere??
   thanx....

Indifference will certainly be the downfall of mankind, but who cares??
