telnet protocol info

sorry if I'm lame about this (no wise cracks! :)

but where in the heck do you go to find out more info on certain protocols
like telnet or ftp, snmp etc..???

all I'm trying to do is just write a real, real, real basic telnet client
to get my feet wet in sockets...
