Hi,
I have an Internet server running Internet services (HTTP, FTP, EMAIL etc.).
Each customer on this server gets his own IP addresses for this services.
That means that I can use IP chains to measure the incoming and outgoing
traffic for each customer and then bill him by the traffic his services
produce. But, that is a problem for customers, because they usually cannot
imagine how much traffic could their services produce and they are afraid to
sign the agreement (which is a problem for us, because we need customers but
we have to pay for high traffic). So here comes my solution, but I do not
know, if it is possible with the current linux software:
Every hour, I will check the traffic produced by each customer and
dynamically shape the speed of customers' IP addresses to keep the traffic
in acceptable limits. That means that I need to shape the speed of each IP
address independently, I need to be able to change the speed of each IP
address every hour and I need to be sure it works without a problem.
So here are the questions, which I am not able to answer:
1. Is there some other package to limit the traffic on a linux box, then the
traffic shaper kernel module? I've been searching on Internet for more then
two days for some other traffic limiting package but found nothing else
which could do what I need.
If the traffic shaper kernel module is the only one existing solution:
2. It is in experimental stage. Is it risky to use it in a commercial
environment?
3. Is it possible to shape the speed of each server's IP address
independently? If it is, how can I do it?
4. Is it OK to change the shaping speed of each IP address every hour? I am
afraid it could put some load on server or even worse...
5. I really wouldn't bother you with this questions if I could find any
usable documentation anywhere? Is there someone working on the traffic
shaper? Are there some traffic shaper web pages? Is there some other source
of info about the traffic shaper then the source code and a small .txt file
in kernel distribution?
Thank you very very much for any help on this topic.
Regards,
Martin
