I've got a client with 3 machines connected to a Cisco 2942 ethernet
switch. From what I can tell, he's on 10BT, although his provider claims
he's on 100BT. I ran some benchmarks, and found that the maximum rate
that I could communicate between machines (all three on the same switch)
was 6.5 megabit. From reliable sources, the internal story at his
provider is that the Cisco 2942 won't recognize any 3COM cards at 100BT,
even though their official story to the customers is that everyone is on
100BT. Also, the card is in half duplex mode. Given that the Cisco 2942
is a 10/100 switch, and that it is supposed to be full duplex (according
to the specs on Cisco's site), any idea what's going on here? Is the
Cisco incompatibility thing true? I find that hard to believe, seeing as
they all follow the same IEE standard, and both are pretty widespread
components.
