Didn't you have specified GATEWAY or GATEWAYDEV in /etc/sysconfig/network?
If yes then remove that. PPP Defaultroute *only* works when there is no
other gateway. Also, if I have diagnosed the problem right then, it should
be showing in /var/log/messages [if you have kept debugging on.]
